The City of Thornton conducted a major expansion and retrofit of its Columbine Water Treatment Plant to address potential water quality concerns and meet future capacity. The project increased plant capacity from 30 million gallons per day to 50 MGD, making it the largest ultra filtration membrane plant retrofit in the world, and a flagship project for the region.

The project included raw water pumping upgrades; modifications to the pretreatment process, including new up flow solids contact clarifiers, integration of ultraviolet disinfection equipment; a new 12,800 sq ft. chemical building; a three million-gallon clear well; 60 mgd high-service pump station and new administration and maintenance facilities.

Design complexities and challenges included the six-month plant shutdown and construction schedule for retrofitting, structural modification to handle additional loads and large piping, designing piping to minimize field welds, adding a 72 inch distribution channel to prevent membrane backwashing and tank drains from affecting plant hydraulics and implementing an innovative control strategy to account for the clarifiers and UV reactors requiring constant flow and UF membranes requiring varying flow.

The Columbine WTP project was started on 02/02/2004 and was completed 07/01/2005. Eckstine Electric had 75,924.5 man hours and no lost time.
